Welcome to our new School of Computing Academic Champion!

I am delighted to announce that Debbie Meharg has been appointed to the post of Connect Academic Champion for the School of Computing!

Firstly a massive thanks is due to Hazel Hall for all her work with Connect, but who has had to stand down in light of her extensive work involvement in the universities Athena Swan application which we all wish her luck for.

A bit about Debbie:

Role title Programme Leader, Lecturer and   Personal Development Tutor

Interviewed by Debbie Ratcliffe

What has been your career path to date?

After graduating from Queens University Belfast I started my career as a Graduate Systems Analyst with Harland and Wolff working on a data warehousing project in the IT department.  This was a real eye opener and great experience – I learned so much about systems and large projects whilst settling into this male dominated environment.  Things at Harland and Wolff were turbulent with strikes and job insecurities so after 1.5 years I moved on to work as a Technical Support Engineer for Segue Software (now Borland).  Working with specific software products and building client relationships this was another steep learning curve but I loved every minute, and it even involved a 3 month spell at their Boston office.  From here I moved on to another American software company – Openwave systems and took on the role of Software Engineer – they specialized in mobile data.  After many years in industry I made the jump to education and have never looked back.

What has been your involvement with Connect so far, if any, and what made you want to become a Connect Academic Champion?

Woman are hugely under-represented in the computing industry and I want to see this change – my experiences have been 100% positive and I would recommend the Computing and IT sector to everyone.
